Zombie Kill of the Week: Day of the Dead
He trains Bub to respond to commands, even to hold a gun and rewards him for positive behavior with human flesh. When it’s discovered by Captain Rhodes, head of the platoon guarding the facility that Dr. Fisher is feeding Bub the remains of his dead soldiers, he flies into a rage and shoots the doctor.
In the midst of a zombie attack on the facility, Bub gets loose from his chains and stumbles upon the body of his caretaker. Like a scene out of Frankenstein, Bub grieves over the death of his creator and naturally seeks revenge, arming himself with a dead soldier’s gun.
Bub tracks down Rhodes, abandoned by his soldiers and wandering the halls in a scramble to escape the encroaching zombie threat. A sure marksman, Bub fires the pistol and hits Rhodes in the leg, forcing him to crawl towards the door that leads out of the underground maze.
Rhodes manages to get to the door and open it, only to discover a horde of zombies waiting on the other side. He turns back to face a determined Bub who levels the gun and fires once more. Rhodes falls backward into the crowd of zombies for the requisite disemboweling and Bub gives him a salute.
Bub is by far the most sympathetic of Romero’s zombies and his destruction of Captain Rhodes represents the triumph of the counter culture over the oppressive military establishment.
